You’ve Done the Inner Work. Why Do You Still Feel Stuck?
Aug 11, 2026
Have you ever caught yourself thinking,
“I know exactly why I do this… so why do I keep doing it?”
It’s a frustrating place to be.
You’ve reflected on your childhood. You understand your protective patterns. You know why certain conversations make you anxious or why making decisions can feel so overwhelming. You may have spent years reading books, listening to podcasts, journaling, going to therapy, or exploring different personal development practices.
And all of that has been valuable.
Understanding ourselves matters. It helps replace self-criticism with compassion. Instead of asking, “What’s wrong with me?” we begin asking, “What has this pattern been trying to protect me from?”
That shift alone can feel incredibly freeing.
But then life happens.
Someone asks something of you and, before you’ve even noticed it, you’ve said yes when you wanted to say no.
You find yourself replaying a conversation for the tenth time, thinking of all the things you wish you had said.
An opportunity appears, yet somehow weeks go by and you still haven’t taken the first step.
Suddenly you’re asking yourself another question.
“If I understand the pattern so well… why hasn’t my life changed?”
For a long time I believed that enough insight would naturally create change. If I could just understand myself a little better, uncover one more limiting belief, or find the missing piece, everything else would fall into place.
What I’ve come to realize is that insight and change are two different things.
Insight helps us understand the past.
Change happens through new experiences.
That distinction changed the way I see personal growth.
Our brains aren’t rewired because we’ve had a powerful realization. They change because they repeatedly experience something different.
Think about learning to ride a bicycle.
You could read everything there is to know about balance. You could understand exactly how momentum works and even explain the physics behind it. None of that would teach your nervous system how to ride.
Eventually, you have to get on the bike.
The learning happens through experience.
Personal growth works much the same way.
You might understand that people pleasing comes from wanting approval, yet your brain still needs the experience of kindly saying no and discovering that the world doesn’t fall apart.
You might understand that you’re an overthinker, but your brain still needs the experience of making a decision before every possible outcome has been analyzed.
You might understand that you’ve been disconnected from yourself for years, but you reconnect by repeatedly choosing to pause, notice what you’re feeling, and respond from that place instead of reacting automatically.
That’s where lasting change begins.
It isn’t because you’ve found another explanation.
It’s because you’ve given your brain evidence that another way is possible.
